Inspired by the song "She's not dead" by Suede.
Sshh, hush now while I tell you a story.
It was a day much like today when the air was still, the earth was hot and rich with it’s own sweat and the sky moved above, blue suede, watching but unmoved. Blood moved through her veins, pulsing hot. And time faded into all of the todays and all of the tomorrows that have ever been. Her muscles ached to run, to dance, to embrace the essence of life and she was in love with being. She has gone, gone away.
Sshh, don’t cry, it has begun and it can never end.
There was a wild-eyed boy with hair as black and wild as the thoughts she thought and eyes as blue as her desire which pierced her heart and ate at her being. He dressed in black boots and a white shirt and he took her by the hand and led her through her every desire.
They walked on the beach hand in hand and the world moved with them and they were life and desire personified. Grace moved with grace, desire with desire, life with life and potency with potency. They were two and one alone, the same rising and falling, breathing together, slipping from lightness to darkness and remaining forever in dusk. She is gone, gone away.
They were the dreams she dared to dream, ecstasy and unity, eternal youth personified with a single breath of two as one. And he promised her forever and she knew she believed him and gave in with a kiss. And they rode on the waves of all there is to ride but the darkness faded.
He left her his memory and she knew she would follow.
She looked for him and she breathed the name of the stars and the earth and the potency of life moved through her. The foam of the ocean broke and fell within her eyes and the leaves of the trees fell around her and moved through her hair and she laughed and shook her head and the sun fell upon it and it glowed. She is not alone but no-one can touch her.
The sand flowed across her feet warm with sunlight, soft as thought, it stole between her toes and lay across her skin and the water washed it away and swept up around her dress and she had to lift it so it wouldn’t get wet and her ankles glistened in the ocean water.
And still she wanted to run, to catch the breeze before it touched the world, to embrace the sun before it showed its face. She dressed in a soft cotton shirt and a long flowing skirt and put beads around her neck and through her hair and she took the car so she could move faster and her ankle chain jingled as she moved her foot on the accelerator. She is gone, gone away.
He was there, somewhere in the distance and the windows were down and the wind blew through her hair, playing, staying with it, wrapping around her head, glowing with life. Blueness stretched on forever, soft like suede and no clouds moved with it, just a ball of fire that moved on forever. She drove all day. She is gone, gone away.
Sshh, rest a while, wait.
Her skin was smooth and soft, not like old leather and it moved with her, flowed over her and no one touched her, not ever, but she is not alone.
And the beach came slowly into sight and it was the right beach. She slowed the car and watched as it grew larger and she drew closer until it was all embracing. It engulfed her with its thoughts though it thought nothing and the sand glowed like fallen stars and the wind whispered and breathed and the earth pulsed and sighed while the ocean stretched on in deepening blue with tiny white caps that rose and broke as an afterthought and she felt scared and sad, then ecstatic and calm. She is gone, gone away.
She parked the car on the edge of the screen and viewed the perfect simplicity of her too perfect dream. And she reached down and lifted the cool chrome of the door handle and opened the car door, so slowly.
Sshh, it is almost time.
Her feet were bare, softness beneath the flesh, moving onto the too perfect set, stepping upwards into the earth. And time faded into all of the todays and all of the tomorrows that have ever been. And the breeze knew her, lifted her hair, aching reaching but never touching, dropping it back, softly to her shoulder, moving her flesh from thought to dream. And the dusk welcomed her in, fading until the sand and sky and she were one. The edges fade.
And she watched as the wild-eyed-boy came towards her and took her in his arms and they walked together into an eternal dusk. They laughed.
She has gone, gone away, no-one can touch her yet she is not alone, she is never alone. She lives on the edge, the edge of all of this where no-one can reach her.
And they never found her and they never spoke of her, and no-one missed her and they never mourned her because no-one knew her, not ever. She has gone, gone away. She will never be alone.
Sshh, hush now sleep. The story is over.
